You could hear it as soon as my students entered the classroom at 8:45am. They couldn't wait to meet Mrs. Lehman's third grade class from York, PA. As 9:30am drew near, they got excited as they heard the familiar sound of someone calling via Skype. We answered and it was them! Both classes were full of smiles as they waved to each other. Each class talked about where they're from and described where they were located in Pennsylvania. We talked about how we were close to Lake Erie and they discussed being in the middle of the state and close to Maryland. My students were excited to find York, PA on a Pennsylvania map. My students had a chance to introduce themselves and tell the class something interesting about themselves. Next, we played "Monster Guess Who" so we could try and guess the monster their class had. Students took turns asking simple "yes/no" questions to reveal their monster. Students were so excited to narrow down and guess their monster. Mrs. Lehman's class asked some questions to guess our monster. Our monster, Spike, was waiting and ready to jump out as soon as it was guessed. Spike jumped out and there was lots of cheering. Mrs. Lehman shared with us that a package should be arriving in the mail soon with our passport stickers so we could write about our journey visiting her classroom.
Mrs. Lehman's class had been writing directions on how to draw their own monster. They invited us to download their stories, follow their directions, and draw what we thought their monsters look like. When asked if my class would like to read and draw their monsters, they overwhelmingly cheered and said "yes!" As we ended our first talk, we decided to meet again to compare each other's drawn monsters.
The next day, the monster directions were downloaded and handed out to my students. They asked for help on some unfamiliar words and were so engaged in drawing Mrs. Lehman's monsters. We are so excited to meet again soon to see how close we are in following their directions and drawing their monsters.
