On Thursday, January 19, 2017, our class had the opportunity to meet and talk with Mr. Fisher and his 4th grade class from Bear River City, Utah. As we connected, both classes were excited to meet and talk with each other. We could see the students cheering and dabbing through our Google Hangouts connection on the SMART flat panel. My second grade students reacted by cheering back. My students were really excited to introduce themselves and share something interesting that they like to do. After our introductions, Mr. Fisher's class had the opportunity to do the same. It was interesting to see each student's personality come out as they spoke and interacted with each other. Of course, the most exciting part was trying to figure out the monster that each other had. My class asked questions to narrow the choices down and we figured out that they had the volcano monster. Many of the boys in my classroom were "in awe" as this tends to be a favorite among them. Then it was our new friends' turn to guess our monster. Our "Spike" was just out of view ready to pop out when they guessed it. They asked really great questions and guessed our monster pretty quickly. "Spike" jumped out and there was lots of cheering from both classes. Then it was question time! Both classes has such great questions for each other. My students were wondering what it looked like out their window. Most were shocked when the answer of mountains and snow was heard. Students were interested to learn about their daily activities and the time zone difference. One of my students said, "Wait...you mean it's lunch time there and it's time for us to go home here?" This caused a roar of mini-conversations to take place among my class. As our trip came to an end, Mr. Fisher mentioned sending our class some photos that show what Bear River City looks like. Our class offered to write and draw pictures to them. So that is something we will start soon!
